Today is Mother’s Day, so HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to all the mommies out there.

Earlier this week Claire asked me what I wanted for Mother’s Day, I of course told her hugs and kisses, but she insisted on a “thing” too. So I suggested that we donate to my favorite cause this week…of course the words were out of my mouth before I had the chance to process that my favorite cause is, ending sex trafficking and human slavery — two things I was not ready to discuss with my 9-year-old.

But she was super excited, so I told her the group I like is called, Not For Sale, and they are trying to make sure no one is forced to work. They believe everyone should be able to have freedom, and freedom means choosing what we do for a living and what happens to our bodies.

She wouldn’t be Claire if she didn’t ask a few questions…so of course she did. But I was able to have a good conversation with her about forced labor (and not the “go clean your room” kind) without scaring her.

She agree with me that it’s a good cause, so we logged onto their website to donate.

This isn’t the first time it’s happened, but Claire noticed the site sells shirt, scraves and jewelry — and she REALLY wanted to get me something. So we had a conversation we’ve had a few times before. (Especially when giving to places like World Wildlife Fund, that offer stuffed animals.) I explained that we could buy an item but then less money goes to the program, and instead of giving more…we are giving less. She nodded her head but I could tell she was bummed, so I gave her a big hug and thanked her for wanting to give me something, but told her the best gift ever is seeing her be generous and kind.

In the end I think we were both happy. Here’s hoping your Mother’s Day is extra special too!
