This weeks giving project took a lot of hard work, planning and effort on Claire’s part. And she couldn’t be more proud. (I’m pretty proud myself.)

As some of you know, Claire has been collecting recycling – glass bottles, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles – from friends and family all over Santa Rosa. It’s been a source of annoyance for poor Dave, as we pile bag after bag of smelly recycling on the side of our driveway…and to be honest, as I loaded it all up, I was questioning the thought of ever doing it again myself.

When Claire and I got to the recycling center I had even more doubts about the crowd of people, the sorting process and the lack of sanitation…but we prevailed. Claire masterfully sorted through 9 bags of trash…er, recycling.

Then we dragged the garbage cans and wire baskets to the weigh station, and Claire got her first recycling ticket. (Which confused us both.) We tried to figure out how much money she would get, as we waited in the EPIC line. I seriously DO NOT recommend going near closing…or on a weekend. We did both, and had to wait an hour in the line.

An hour of me inwardly complaining and grumbling about how dumb this plan was. And how Claire was only going to get $5 for her efforts, and how that wouldn’t teach her about responsibility or work ethic. It would just bum her out.

But all my internal whining was for nothing…

She collected enough recycling to earn $23.75!!! She announced quite loudly to everyone around us, “THAT’S ENOUGH TO BUY A WHOLE FLOCK OF CHICKENS!!!” And she’s absolutely right folks, for the low, low price of $20 bucks we (or you…or anyone!) can buy a whole flock of chickens from Heifer International to help provide income and food for a struggling/hungry family. Which is exactly what Claire wanted to do.

But, wait! There’s more…that’s right ladies and gents, you can help too. Call us, text us, email us or facebook us. We’ll add you to our recycling route — or even better give you our address and you can drop it off in the driveway. We provide free hugs!

Live too far away to trade your trash for hugs??? No worries, you can donate here and help Claire raise enough money to buy a goat, or cow or sheep….or just a ton of chickens.
